Three more recalls were released by the government recently that added to the growing list of recalled Hyundai and Kia vehicles already under scrutiny. This latest round adds around 500,000 vehicles to the list, this time due to engine failures and fires.
The government is responding to consumer complaints of fires. The companies have already recalled about 2.4 million vehicles since 2015 and their problems have prompted investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The problems seem to be centered around high exhaust gas temperatures that cause abnormal combustion and damage to the pistons and connecting rods. This allows the rods to pierce the engine, causing oil leaks and fires.
At Mayer & Rosenberg, P.C., we realize that vehicles are among the many products that are recalled on a regular basis. Consumer safety is vital. If you need a Kansas City product liability attorney, you can call us today.
The Scope Of The Problem
You may not realize the full extent of the problems faulty products can cause, but we want you to be aware that there are currently hundreds of active recalls that span every industry. If you look at the government recall website, you will see new products added daily that do not make the nightly news. This is a scary thought because we would all like to think that the products we buy are safe for us and our families to use and consume.
Looking at some of the latest recalls, we see the following:
- Bean sprouts with possible listeria contamination
- Marinara sauce with undeclared allergens
- Cribs with faulty support systems
- Sodium chloride infusion bags (IV bags) mislabeled
No industry is spared. Look around your house and count how many products you use. There are thousands, especially when you consider that many of our household products are actually a combination of many parts and rely on multiple manufacturers.
What can go wrong?
Often, the problem is not actually a defective product itself, rather it is the labeling. If hazards and side effects are left off, allergens are not declared, or the instructions are wrong, the product could be used incorrectly by a consumer.
Other times, a product does have a poor design that makes it dangerous. Likewise, there could be an error in manufacturing that alters a product from its design.
Most products we use and consume are safe, but it only takes one faulty product to completely change a person’s life.
