What Changes Could Be On The Way?

There are many large commercial eighteen-wheelers in and around Kansas City. These vehicles provide valuable services to our economy. However, they are not always safe. Local news reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has failed to mandate changes that could prevent many truck crash injuries and deaths. One of those changes is requiring big trucks to have automatic braking systems and forward collision warning systems.

Experts say that these two safety measures might have averted thousands of rear-end truck crashes over the last few decades.

Now, legislators in Washington are getting fed up. Recent legislation introduced by Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia would mandate that new commercial trucks be required to “have systems that alert drivers when they are approaching a vehicle, and then automatically slow down the truck if the driver fails to brake.”

Pamela Biddle, a woman who lost her 23-year-old son an ex-husband in 2017, stood with legislators in support of these measures.

“What doo is implementing all of these safety features in cars – like emergency braking, airbags, seat belts, crumble zones – when a truck, like the one that killed my son, can barrel down the road, not apply brakes, collide with a car and render all those things I just listed completely and totally useless,” Biddle said at a news conference.

One large trucking company, Schneider National, installed collision migration systems in 2012. They say that there has been a 68% decrease in rear-end collisions.
