Are The City Streets Becoming Safer?

by | Feb 8, 2019 | Vehicle Accidents

The year’s 85th fatality in Kansas City came the day after Christmas when a motorcyclist was run over and killed in Northland. That number sounds high, but it is lower than 2017’s total fatality count of 100. In fact, that is a fairly significant drop from just one year to the next.

The Kansas City Police spokesman says the reduction of fatalities in the city could have to do with the fact that officers are writing more traffic tickets. A bunch more in fact.

“If there is a correlation with increased traffic enforcement and lowering fatalities then we will definitely continue to seek those increase in our traffic department,” said Sgt. Jake Becchina.

While more speeding tickets may be annoying to many drivers here, it is worth it if lives are saved. Speeding is a major contributor to traffic injuries and fatalities. At Mayer & Rosenberg, P.C., we want to help if you need a Kansas City car accident attorney. Our knowledgeable and experienced team will work diligently to secure the compensation you deserve if another person’s negligence has caused you harm.

Statistics For The State

We all know that traffic accidents are common, but some are worse than others. When looking at the latest reporting year in the state, we see that there were:

  • 158,015 total vehicle crashes
  • 947 people killed in crashes
  • 57,811 people injured in crashes

Often, these accidents result in only minor injuries. Other times, though, the results are much worse. For serious accidents, we commonly see catastrophic injuries that result in long-term damages and disabilities. The cost of medical care can become tremendous, but there are other hidden costs of accidents that many people do not consider. These costs can include lost income and benefits, loss of enjoyment of life, long-term care facilities, and more.

Why Major Accidents Occur?

When we look at the causes of major accidents, we can see that many of them revolve around drinking and driving. There were 122 people killed and over 2,600 injured as a result of alcohol-involved crashes during the latest reporting year.

We also know that distracted driving is a growing problem. If someone is looking at the screen of their phone or another device, they cannot properly watch the road.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, speeding is also a major factor when it comes to accidents.
